Emiko Mayoi (間宵 恵美子 Mayoi Emiko) is the main female protagonist of the Jujutsu Kaisen series. She is the daughter of Maxim Smirnov and Yumi Mayoi.

Emiko was living a normal life in Sendai City with Yuuji Itadori, until the pair encountered Megumi Fushiguro and she drank the blood of Himiko Akaguro. After becoming Himiko's vessel, Emiko began attending Tokyo Jujutsu High alongside Megumi and Nobara as first-year students.

Emiko is a relatively short girl with a slim figure. She has long white hair with two side pieces that frame her face and drop them slightly past her chest. She has wide purple eyes that are described to be gentle with long eyelashes. Whenever her limit of using Himiko's cursed technique occurs, her veins become more noticeable as they turn black and her mouth becomes more feline with her canines turning pointed, much like a vampire.

At the start of the series, Emiko wore light-coloured high waisted trousers, a white t-shirt with matching coloured trainers and a purple cardigan. Emiko's jujutsu school uniform consists of a dark blue gakuran-style top (a button-down jacket), but the sleeves reach above her elbows and long matching pants that reach just above her ankles. Underneath, she wears a white long sleeved, buttoned down top and she also sports black combat boots. Her uniform was later updated with a brown utility belt that can hold syringes and any other equipment that can fit how much the belt holds.

In middle school, Emiko wore a dark coloured sailor uniform, a pair of white thigh high socks, and brown school shoes. She was commonly seen wearing a high ponytail and previously had dark eye bags.

After the Shibuya Incident, Emiko cut her hair to reach her shoulders and is now fluffy and unruly, unlike when it was neatly styled. She also has a massive scar going down the left side of her lip due to an attack from Mahito. Before Himiko took over her body and fixed it, Emiko's nose was broken by Mahito.

During the Shinjuku Showdown, Emiko gained a wing-like scar on her right cheek. Her hands and arms are also heavily scarred from having to take on multiple of Himiko's cursed techniques.

Emiko is very kind by nature and is described to be a polite, compassionate individual, who is seen with a soft smile. She's always loved seeing smiles on people's faces and to ensure that she can always see them like that, Emiko wants to make sure that they're able to live a normal life.

Although she is nurturing and jovial to everyone she meets, Emiko is oblivious to how her way of living affects others. Even when Yumi constantly pointed out how it wasn't natural for a girl to be born supernaturally strong, Emiko never understood what was wrong with it, but never seeked out why. She never complied with the harsh words her mother came out with, but disliked how her 'abnormal' traits were never used for anything other than simple matters such as competing in shot put. Emiko can be quite straight-forward without meaning to, being able to empathise with those who most people would have a distaste in such as Mai Zenin, despite the latter commenting about Yuuji's death, but found reasoning in her behaviour and forgiving her, even going as far as to praising Mai for being able to speak her mind without feeling bad. Both Yuuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro say that she's like an angel in the way she thinks and acts, which further more charms them more when it comes to Emiko.

She can't bring herself to end someone's life if she can tell they're struggling, doing anything to prevent having to go down that route unless it's necessary. However, that doesn't mean she isn't without anger entirely, especially when it comes to true evil, one of which is Mahito laughing at Junpei's death. Emiko was so repulsed by his actions that she wanted to kill him and harboured a massive distaste towards the cursed spirit, even stating that there'll be no one in any afterlife that will accept him. Emiko always does the best she can to achieve her goals and consolidates confidence during situations that acquire a sense of direction for herself and her allies. However, following the incident in Shibuya, Emiko found her mindset shifting and began questioning if it was even possible to allow people to live a normal life with problems caused by jujutsu constantly surrounding everyone.

She viewed herself as being worse than that of a sinner, blaming her body for being able to withhold a curse like Himiko that causes harm to those who Emiko only wants to see smile. After the incident was over, she started finding herself to understand that she was simply a 'cog' that exorcises curses and began suffering with survivor's guilt upon witnessing the demise of innocent civilians as well as Maxim and Kento with Nobara's injuries only adding more salt to the wound. However, with Megumi's encouragement, she wants to continue using her abnormality to fight for a better future, even going as far as to pushing her compassion by reaching out to Himiko in the final battle and talking to her about her happiest times via her domain expansion. However, this didn't mean that Emiko would disregard the Queen of Corruption's crimes, promising her that her death will be guaranteed and if she's lucky enough, Emiko would grant her every last drop of her blood if it means to see Himiko's smile one last time.

BACKGROUND

Emiko was born on October 31st 2003 as the daughter of Maxim Smirnov and Yumi Mayoi. Her father left the world of Jujutsu to raise his only child with his wife, ensuring that he finally found his place in life. However, Yumi often became too overbearing with her husband, causing frequent fights to break out and soon enough, Maxim got a divorce and abandoned his family with Emiko barely being able to remember anything about her dad. 

After him leaving, Yumi and Emiko's relationship began to strain heavily, especially when Emiko's superhuman prowess became evident when she was six years old, to which the elder woman thinking her daughter's gift was a waste and wondered what was the point in her living if she couldn't put it to good use. Unbeknownst to Emiko, she had injested a jar of Himiko's blood by Kenjaku, under the disguise of a babysitter, who implanted the cursed object into a bunny, which soon got injured and slowly started dying, making Emiko try kiss the wound better to save its life. By the time she was in middle school, she was a shy and withdrawn girl with no friends whatsoever and spent most of her time after school at her house either studying or attending to her drunken mother at night.

She was soon transferred into Yuuji Itadori's class, who was also her next-door neighbour since they were in elementary school but the two never interacted until Emiko was asked to help tutor him. Eventually, the two became close friends after a few months and she came out of her shell, but the issues with Yumi at home were continuing with the elder woman disapproving of her daughter's choices in both life and friends, creating a rocky relationship with Yuuji. In June 2018, Yumi had to leave home and live across the country due to a business trip. Emiko was left home alone and occasionally made phone calls with her mother that cut them short under the excuse of having to go into a meeting. 

Most of the time, Emiko would go over to Yuuji's house or visit his grandfather at the hospital with him and spend time with the Occult Club at her school.

ABILITIES AND POWERS

Emiko is one of Tokyo Jujutsu High's most powerful and talented students. Both Satoru Gojo and Mukuro Kamakiri places her on the same level of potential as Yuta Okkotsu and Kinji Hikari, who are regarded to be the four students (including Yuuji Itadori) to surpass their strength. Although she is the daughter of a jujutsu sorcerer, Emiko previously wielded no cursed energy as well as having no knowledge of the Jujutsu world; however, she was soon able to contend with and defeat Grade 1 and special grade curses.

Because of her superhuman prowess that she combines with cursed energy, Emiko is able to contain Himiko Akaguro with no side effects, including the Queen's poisonous blood, allowing the vessel to manipulate and perceive the shape of souls. This ability is effective when it comes to fighting Mahito, a special grade cursed spirit whose technique allows him to control the shape of his soul, which becomes less effective as Emiko is able to harm him.

✧ CURSED ENERGY ✧
↳ Cursed Energy Capacity: Emiko's cursed energy originates from the special grade cursed object, the blood of Himiko Akaguro. Even without using her innate technique, she has shown great proficiency with learning how to control cursed energy.

↳ Cursed Energy Manipulation: Despite being the daughter of a jujutsu sorcerer, Emiko previously wielded barely any knowledge about jujutsu, but quickly grew accustomed to learning how to using and understanding cursed energy - without having to use Black Flash - via the various training sessions. The Shibuya Incident is where Emiko had much better finesse in terms of fighting with her cursed energy and how it allowed her borrowed innate technique to become more efficient in battle.

↳ Cursed Energy Reinforcement: Even before developing her borrowed innate technique, Emiko combined her cursed energy with her superhuman abilities and martial arts techniques, mainly roundhouse kicks as it is her speciality. Other than her kicks, Emiko projects cursed energy into her hands, allowing her to whiplash a curse and exorcise it without having to cause any more damage.

↳ Black Flash (黒閃 Kokusen): A phenomenon that occurs when the user applies cursed energy within 0.000001 seconds of a physical hit, creating a spatial distortion that causes their cursed energy to flash black and amplifies the destructive power of the strike to the power of 2.5. While Emiko is capable of using Black Flash more than seven times, she only uses it when it comes to making impactful hits as shown during her fight with Mahito on October 31st.

✧ BINDING VOWS ✧
Emiko has an unnamed binding vow with Himiko. The Queen of Corruption agreed to grant Emiko one of her techniques under two conditions: ① the more techniques her host uses, the more visible that Himiko's markings would grow onto Emiko and ② she would forget about the first agreement. Once all of the markings are imprinted, Emiko would have to allow Himiko to take over until she's ready to give the body back.

Despite disagreeing to the terms at first, Himiko said that her host had no other choice as she knew that Emiko would eventually resort to a more reckless route in order to become stronger anyway such as her letting Himiko have control of her body at the Detention Centre to get rid of the Finger Bearer. Hating the fact that she knew this, Emiko eventually agreed.

✧ CURSED TECHNIQUES ✧
↳ Bloody Mary (ブラッディマリー Buraddimarī): By injesting  someone else's blood, Emiko is able to use their cursed techniques, including those that are genetically passed down. She does not need to collect the blood of a technique she has already used again as the blood will stay in her system. However, since her and Himiko share the same technique, the Queen of Corruption is able to use the blood her host has gathered to her advantage. During the Culling Games, as a result of Himiko managing to create a new body for herself, Emiko no longer shared this technique.

⎯⎯ Straw Doll Technique (芻霊呪法 Sūrei Juhō): Emiko has used Nobara Kugisaki's technique, which manipulates a set of tools being a hammer, nails and a straw doll. She first used it during the Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event, taking an arrow of Mafuyu Aikyo's and disabling her cursed technique. It's a proficient technique Emiko commonly uses as she finds its abilities easy to understand and use against various opponents.

⎯⎯ White Flame (白い炎 Shiroi Honō): Emiko has used Maxim Smirnov's technique, which allows her to generate and manipulate intense and powerful white flames at will. She first used it during the Kyoto Sister Exchange Event where she blasted a massive flame at Mafuyu upon her performing a surprise attack on Emiko; this move could have caused serious injuries if the third year didn't dodge quick enough.

⎯⎯ Construction (構築術式 Kōchiku Jutsushiki): Emiko has used Mai Zenin's technique, which allows her to create matter from nothing. It's not an effective ability to use during battle, but there is value in it as it allows Emiko to create Nobara's set of tools for when she uses her cursed technique and even a couple of other weapons.

⎯⎯ Idle Transfiguration (無為転変 Mui Tenpen): Emiko has used Mahito's technique, which grants her the ability to manipulate and change souls. This is a technique she rarely uses due to considering his blood 'filthy' and resents having to perform anything with it. She used it during her fight with the Akaguro brothers, creating a second body that distracted Hitoshi and Tsurugi while she planned a strategy in hiding.

⎯⎯ Ten Shadows Technique (十種影法術 Tokusa no Kage Bōjutsu): Emiko has used Megumi Fushiguro's technique, which is a power passed down in the Zenin clan and allows the user to summon up to ten potential shikigami using shadows as an intermediary. She first used it during her fight with the Akaguro brothers, using Divine Dog: Totality (玉犬「渾」Gyokuken・Kon) to dodge their attacks whenever her feet aren't quick enough to move by herself in time.

⎯⎯ Gravity Control (重力操作 Jūryoku Sōsa): Emiko has used Sachi Amane's technique, which allows the user to manipulate the effect of gravity on everything, making it weightless. She has used this technique various times such as the Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event against Mafuyu Aikyo, the first fight with the Akaguro Brothers and the Shibuya Incident (although this was Himiko in disguise of Emiko).

✧ INNATE TECHNIQUES ✧
↳ Pure Touch (純粋なタッチ Junsuina Tatchi): Due to consuming her father's blood when she previously wielded Himiko's technique, Emiko was able to create a technique of her own stemming from his own abilities. Upon touching a living being, Emiko causes the said person to become 'pure', causing the opponent's abilities to enhance. The same thing can be applied if she uses a weapon and inflicts an injury. This technique creates a double-edged sword against the opponent as their abilities will become so overbearing that it'll cause physical backlash on their body, preventing them from being able to barely use any cursed techniques or energy.

↳ Reverse Cursed Technique (反転術式 Hanten Jutsushiki): Within the month against the battle with Sukuna and Himiko, Emiko learned how to use reverse cursed technique to heal herself. This was used to regenerate her head back on her neck after Himiko used Megumi's Ten Shadows Technique.

↳ Euphoria (幸福 Kōfuku): From the help of Kusakabe's replacement training, Emiko was able to learn basic barrier techniques, soon allowing her to create her own domain expansion. Emiko's domain creates a white place where glowing memories of happiness surround both the opponent and the user. The hits of this domain directly attack the soul of Emiko's targets with an overwhelming pain caused by their happiest times.
